Notes from Charter member and Past President Lori Waters
Kepler Astrologers Toastmasters club was founded three years ago by Kepler College President Donna Young with the intent to assist both astrology students and professional astrologers to become skilled speakers. Most of us had no familiarity with the 100 year old Toastmaster organization but we embraced the group’s tried and true methods of improving public speaking. We were a bit of motley crew to the distinguished Toastmasters of District 42 that got us started, and a bit of a mystery as there had never been a toastmasters group focused on the special interest of astrology. But our club members were united with a love of astrology and a commitment to support each other as we each individually worked towards finding and honing our public speaking voice.
It’s not surprising that nurturing is a perfect keyword for our group as we were chartered under a Cancer sun and Mercury. Though the time we were entered into the Toastmaster International system can be debated, there is some agreement on 11:30 a.m. Mountain July 12, 2022 as our Charter chart. That time gives us a Virgo ascendant, which makes sense for a group that is focused on perfecting the art of communicating astrological knowledge. We were founded the day before the full moon, with that ultimate waxing gibbous (gibbus) moon dripping with potential. But with that moon being in Capricorn in the 5th house, there is an emphasis on hard work and discipline to achieve our creative goals. Opposite that moon is our sun in Cancer in the 11th house of social groups. The organizing force of this group from its magical inception has been one of nurturing and support. Hard work is expected but easier to be pushed toward when we know we have a family supporting our growth. Within our protective structure, members are encouraged and supported to practice impromptu as well as scripted speaking.
Our club has evolved to become a professional development Laboratory with astrologers of all levels of experience from across the world honing their speaking craft across all paradigms of astrological practices. We have reached Toastmasters International’s most esteemed honor of President’s Distinguished Club each of our three years. As we enter our fourth year and subsequently Fourth house profection year, our club has moved its homebase to District 100 in Los Angeles, where our members will have increased opportunities to practice and compete in person as well as online as we have done since our inception.
